Ethical Eco-tourism

Back to Eco-tourism Experiences

Eco-tourism has the potential to aid in the conservation of species and their environment. However, the term “Eco-tourism” has been abused by many tour operations that display little regard for species or their environment. In response, SAMPLA developed the “Ethical Eco-tourism” award in which we recognize operations that hold true to the principles of Eco-tourism (as defined below).

Eco-tourism can be defined as: “Responsible visitors to natural areas that do not harm the environment and improve the well-being of local people.” This means that those who implement and participate in responsible tourism activities should follow the following principles:

  1. minimize impact
  2. build environmental and cultural awareness and respect
  3. provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts
  4. provide direct financial benefits for conservation
  5. provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people
  6. raise sensitivity to host countries' political, environmental, and social climate

The “Ethical Eco-tourism” award is issued to companies that fulfil all six of these basic principles of eco-tourism.
