Inter specific interactions between White sharks and Bottlenose Dolphins

White sharks have traditionally being identified as predators of dolphins, including the bottlenose. However, in 2004 the witnessing of dolphins harassing great whites, and displaying no flight behavior made SAMPLA scientists re-assess this theory. Analysis of scientific literature revealed that although evidence exists of white sharks feeding (possibly scavenging) on dolphins, there has never been a sufficiently verified account of a white shark attacking a dolphin. SAMPLA is now assessing the probability of predatory encounters by observing body scars on living bottlenose dolphins in a area of high white shark density.
